Milena Doncheva

Artist Statement

We live in compliance with infinite versions of reality, time and daily routine. With life in a constant state of fluidity, Milena challenges the status quo to create alternative perceptions. Her work offers multiply footprints illustrating the many possible passages in life, hers, ours or a story in search of an ideal projection. Milena combines painting, textiles and technical drawing with a juxtaposition of layering, duplicating, transparency, decomposition and image inversion fabricated on the surface of her work. An inherent focal point: the presence of the character at the epicenter of her work, there to enhance the illusion of self, or as an intrinsic symbol of the interwoven narrative.

Milena’s current work in progress “Archeology of Memory” is an exploration of the past, entwined with rich and vivacious layering’s of paint, typography, textures, collage and embedded objects. A painted and mixed media series: depicts a journey through memories, encapsulated through symbolic imagery and artifacts. This work with its plusher technique is a progression upon her earlier series, “Mirror Images” which
transcended the norm of self and projected perceptions, leading to a mirroring of conceptual representations. The succession of reconstructed forms and images translate indefinitely from the past (memories), present (mirror) and future (projected), to become symbolic and a metaphoric medium. Milena’s work accentuates a form of aesthetic realism, but ultimately draws into question the perceived truth.

Milena combines painting, textiles and drawing with a juxtaposition of layering, duplicating, transparency, decomposition and image inversion. The process of creating is an evolution of layered images. The temptation to break the laws of reality and to create a new world exists for her as she constantly invents and reinvents.
