David Cumming

Artist Statement

I did my first “tableau” (or “mini”-installation) twenty years ago, and this piece,
“Knight, Death and the Devil, After Durer” is in the show. I do satirical pieces in five different categories: The History of Art, The History of Literature, Politics, Religion (anti), and Social Commentary. The pieces selected for this show are from the History of Art category.

My intent with these pieces is to make the viewer smile first (even laugh) and then think. These are idea pieces in what I hope is the best sense.

The original surrealists professed to base their work on the sub-conscious or unconscious—often on dreams. I see my own work as coming more out of Dada—where a change in label or perhaps a found object gave it a very different meaning.

Bio

View David Cumming's Bio
I was born in Los Angeles and came to Canada for good at the age of 22. Shortly afterwards I began to design and make furniture, and with time this evolved into sculpture in wood, stone and other materials, and various other forms of three-dimensional art, like the tableaux on display in this show.

I specialize in bent lamination and taper lamination in exotic woods. In the stone work I use tools from woodworking. My tableaux often utilize cheap plastic toys as well as found objects.

As an artist I have a little background but I am primarily self-taught. I am married to a woman who is also an artist, Sally Cumming.
